UFM - Education - Lessons from the past (648 x 656).png

In this immersive learning session, our expert team of museum educators will help your class gain an insight into the everyday life of a child in Ulster during the Victorian period. Your pupils will have a chance to take part in the kinds of learning activities children in a school like this would have experienced – all in the authentic surroundings of our original schoolhouse building – the Ballyverdagh National School.

This session involves real museum objects associated with school life, which your pupils will be encouraged to explore and investigate. The learning activities will help them reflect on how the daily routines of children have changed over time, and how the challenges faced by their peers in the past differ to the ones they may encounter today. At the end of the session, there will be a chance to re-enact a traditional class photo in front of the building to create a memento of your visit!

Key activities:

  • Carrying and collecting turf and coins
  • Handwriting practice (either with ink or slates)
  • Recitation as a class
  • A lesson in discipline (we do not enact the punishments!)
  • Teacher dress up
  • Recreation of a class photo from the past

Price: £60 per class

Key Stages: 2

Available to book: 3rd September 24 – 27th June 25
