Fireside Folktales
Book NowA gentle introduction to life in a rural cottage in early 1900s Ulster for Foundation and Key stage 1 students led by our Education team. After exploring the interior of one of our authentic houses and looking for clues, children will have the opportunity to reflect and discuss how homes in the past differ from their own modern lived experiences. In the kitchen we’ll discuss where food came from in the days before supermarkets, what people ate and how they prepared food without modern electric appliances.
Then it’s time to cosy up, settle down by the turf fire and hear the farmer’s wife recount the tale of when a hungry stranger with a magic stone knocked on her door…. Your class will have the opportunity to get fully involved in the telling of the story of ‘Stone Soup’ with lots of objects to handle, actions and sounds to make and characters to invent to bring the tale alive. After your story session, the class can visit another house to sample some soda farls, prepared to a traditional recipe and cooked over an open fire.
