craft workshops: intro to letter carving
Get hands-on with wood as you make a personalised hand carved sign led by our talented craft demonstrator
Fully BookedCreate your own personalised hand carved sign at this bespoke workshop on Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th January.
At the Folk Museum, we have a fantastic team of in-house skilled craftspeople who keep our heritage skills and traditions alive for future generations. Join us for an introduction to letter carving where you'll spend two full days with our expert carpenter and make a personalised hand carved sign with a word of your choice to bring home with you! (word to be pre-approved with the carpenter before the workshop).
The workshop will cover wood selection, preparation and understanding grain for carving. You'll find out what tools are required, and how to sharpen chisels and gouges, as well as lettering forms including how to layout and correct spacing for carving. Our carpenter will demonstrate each element when carving letters to show the appropriate technique for carving straights, curves and junctions. Then you'll be free to have a go at carving, with assistance on hand!
