volunteering at the museum
Get involved with Making, Growing, and Living at the Ulster Folk Museum.
Register NowVolunteers have always played an important role in the Museum. As we renew our position as a shared heritage and environmental resource, we are developing more ways to get involved.
Volunteering is a unique way to connect to the museum, to the environment and to each other. We offer opportunities for people to volunteer as individuals, as groups, as well as family volunteering. Whether you are interested in volunteering for a one-off opportunity or on a more regular basis, volunteering can offer you a unique insight to this special community resource.
Volunteering offers a wealth of benefits including the chance to get outdoors, improve health and wellbeing, and the opportunity to learn new skills.
"As someone that was struggling with mental health issues, volunteering at the Folk Museum has been one of the best opportunities that I have had in my life. I have developed a confidence in myself, found a new passion, a sense of purpose and made lots of new friends through the social aspects. I describe volunteering at the Folk Museum as my light in the darkness." - Vicky, volunteer
Our seasonal experiences at the museum are enhanced by people volunteering to grow heritage fruit and vegetables in our cottage gardens; support with events such as Harvest, Halloween and Christmas; and getting hands-on experience of heritage farming.

The Green Gym at the Ulster Folk Museum is a great way to learn new skills, meet new people and help restore our cottage gardens to produce the heritage fruit and vegetables that they would have 100 years ago.
In partnership with The Conservation Volunteers, we host a Green Gym session at the Folk Museum every Friday. Check out our video below to see how the project is transforming our heritage gardens as well as the impact it has on those who volunteer.
